BOSSCOVER CIRCULAR SYSTEM

An EPDM roof that can be removed later

Today, a flat roof must be reliably watertight and able to move with the building throughout its lifespan. BossCover The Circular System combines a durable EPDM membrane with mechanical, detachable connections. This ensures that the installed components remain accessible for inspection, recovery, and potential reuse.

DESIGN FOR DISASSEMBLY

Circularity starts with connection

Technically, a material can last for years, while the building or roof structure may change sooner. If the layers are permanently bonded together, it becomes difficult to capitalize on that residual value later on. BossCover The Circular System is therefore based on a design that allows for disassembly.

Sustained Performance: Keeping Materials in Their Original Function for as Long as Possible

Modular Design: Detachable Connections Minimize Destructive Disassembly

Preserving value: Reuse takes precedence over processing into raw materials

ROOF EXTENSION

Two roof structures, one principle

The roof surface is either loosely laid and ballasted or mechanically fastened. In both designs, the connections and system components are mechanically fastened so that they remain detachable. In the Circular Ballasted System, the membrane remains loosely laid and is ballasted. In the Circular Mechanical System, the membrane is mechanically fastened, as are the eaves and roof edge.

CERTEFIX AND ROOF EDGE PROFILE

Detachable connections at the eaves and roof edge

With the BossCover Certefix, the EPDM membrane is mechanically clamped into the roof edge, without the need for adhesive fastening. The roof edge profile mechanically anchors the membrane to the roof edge while also allowing the connection to be detached.

RENOVATION, ADDITION, AND DEMOLITION

Designed for Change

A building rarely remains unchanged throughout its entire lifespan. By designing the roof structure to accommodate future modifications from the outset, usable materials are not automatically lost during renovation or repurposing.

Renovation and retrofit insulation: the membrane is removed to allow access to the underlying layers

Add-on floors and expansion: the existing structure will be removed, and the materials will remain recoverable

Disassembly and subsequent use: components remain accessible individually

Circular Roofs in Practice

For its own new office, the Belgian architectural firm AST77 chose BossCover Circular System in combination with reclaimed insulation, covering 500 m² of roof. At the temporary asylum seekers’ center in Dordrecht, circularity was incorporated into the design from the outset: a 6,000 m² roof with 1,100 meters of Certefix, constructed with the intention of later dismantling and reassembly at a different location.

NEW LIFE

From EPDM Scraps to Rooftile XL

During processing and prefabrication, EPDM scrap is generated that cannot be reused as a roofing membrane. BossCover collects this clean scrap and has it processed into granules. That recycled material serves as the raw material for BossCover Rooftile XL, a durable rubber tile for flat roofs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Circular Roofs

What is a circular roof?

A circular roof is designed to be dismantled at a later date. The layers are not permanently bonded but are mechanically fastened. As a result, the membrane, insulation, and system components remain accessible for inspection, recovery, and potential reuse.

What is the BossCover Circular System?

BossCover Circular System is a demountable roof assembly featuring a durable EPDM membrane and detachable connections. The roof surface is either loose-laid and ballasted or mechanically fastened. At the eaves and along the roof edge, Certe BossCover s and the “ BossCover ” roof edge profile provide demountable connections.

What is the difference between the ballasted system and the mechanical system?

In the Circular Ballasted System, the membrane remains loose and is ballasted. In the Circular Mechanical System, the membrane is mechanically fastened. In both designs, the roof edge and eaves are constructed using system components developed specifically for this purpose. The mechanical fastening ensures a robust roof structure that can withstand high wind loads.

Can existing EPDM be reused during a renovation?

During a renovation, the EPDM membrane can be removed to gain access to the underlying layers. If, after inspection, the membrane is still technically sound, it can be reinstalled after additional insulation or other modifications have been made.

What happens to EPDM that can no longer be reused?

Pure EPDM scrap is collected and processed into granules. These granules serve as the raw material for BossCover Rooftile XL, a rubber tile for flat roofs. Recycling only comes into play when reuse is no longer possible or practical.
